Morgan
Residence (1990) - Topanga, CA
A retired Broadway actor's dream house, this project began as a small sculpted
clay model on a sheet of plywood. It grew into a series of undulating concrete
forms, which nestle into the surrounding oak woodlands and meadows.
The
unique structure is composed of a web of steel reinforcing supporting
a thin shell of ferro-cement and insulation which is finished with a variety
of colored plasters inside and out. As light as the structure is, it suffered
no damage in the 1993 Malibu/Topanga fire or the 1994 Northridge Earthquake.
The complex of spaces tie together
in a unique shape to provide 6,000 square feet of living space with canyon
and meadow views to the north.
